Cattle drives, Thanksgiving, crisp air, and good food—autumn is a particularly delightful time here. In the Großarltal valley and the Salzburg region, the "Farmer's Autumn" (Bauernherbst) revolves largely around regional cuisine, tradition, and authentic glimpses into rural life.
Specialties are served everywhere on the alpine pastures and at the Bauernherbst restaurants, accompanied by numerous events such as alpine festivals, traditional folk evenings, or the well-known sheep drive. In total, there are around 2,000 events centered around customs and culinary arts in the Salzburger Land region.
Autumn is also ideal for hiking: crisp mountain air, great distant views, and colorful landscapes. The days are often still pleasantly warm. The panoramic cable car takes you up to about 1,850 meters until mid-October – from there, numerous tours of varying difficulty levels start toward peaks, lakes, and alpine huts.
